Golfing is a male activity, get lessons and join them on the course. Men network on the golf course all the time, take it further and progress to flirting. Even if you are not good at sports, the men will most often be encouraging of your efforts.

After listening to my friends go on and on about their experiences playing golf, I finally decided to take up golf again. Except for sporadic forays with rented clubs, I had not played golf since I caddied with my dad in the forties. He did teach me the correct grip and took me out a few times as a bona fide golfer, but good I was not. In college, I was chosen to teach the grip to the novice golfing students, but I never got to play myself.

Not owning a set of clubs, I haunted the area garage sales for a usable set. At the third garage sale a very nice set of clubs with a fairly new bag leaned

against the side of the garage. Another buyer spotted the clubs at the same time, but I unashamedly raced to get there first. The tag said $15.00, the woods were made of real wood and I bought them immediately. Chagrined to see that the putter was missing, I planned a hint to the wife for an early birthday present.Then it dawned on me that besides the putter there were a few items missing. No balls or tees graced the pockets. Golf shoes could be expensive and what about that special leather glove that always hung out of the pro golfer’s pocket? Add to the list a divot smoother, a ball brush, a water bottle and a matching rag to wipe your hands on.

The Shipwreck That Began The Tradition Of “Women And Children First”

The Captain of the sinking ship, HMS Birkenhead, shouted “every man for himself”, but the troops stood on the doomed ship and calmly waited their fate as they knew that if they stormed the three serviceable lifeboats, the women and children in them would surely drown. They stood in their ranks even as the ship split in two. The ship then tilted and the soldiers were thrown overboard. Some drowned and others faced an even worse fate as the waters were infested with sharks. Of the 638 people who sailed on the HMS Birkenhead, only 193 survived. And that is where the saying “women and children first” comes from. Gold

reputed to be worth in excess of 300,000 pounds went down with the ship, but to this day if any of it has been found, it has not been reported to the authorities.

Lake Keowee is a gorgeous lake located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. This lake was constructed by Duke Power Company for the purpose of generating hydroelectric power, but quickly became a loved and favorite leisure and recreation spot for locals and visitors. The word Keowee, means “Place of the Mulberries”, and is pronounced “Kee-oh-wee.”

An interesting fact is that records indicate that the Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto visited the Keowee area while traveling through Upstate South Carolina in 1540.
